Taoiseach In Brussels For Brexit Talks
The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is in Brussels for a series of Brexit-related meetings today, Wednesday 06 February.
He is hoping to consolidate support for the Irish backstop, as the UK moves to seek changes to the provision.
Mr Varadkar has held talks with Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, and will later meet with the head of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker and chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.
He plans to thank EU officials for their solidarity with Ireland over the border issue, as well as make progress on contingency plans for a no-deal Brexit.
The delegation comes only 24 hours before Prime Minister Theresa May makes her own trip to Brussels, in a bid to win changes to the Withdrawal Agreement.
Yesterday, Mrs May said her commitment to avoiding a hard border with the Republic of Ireland is "unshakeable".
