Teaching Crisis Could See Children Being Sent Home From Schools

Children could be sent home from school due to a shortage of teachers, the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI), has warned.

Issuing the warning, TUI President Seamus Lahart, said that ongoing issue of pay disparity between teachers who qualified before 2010 has resulted in new graduates "voting with their feet and changing career".

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, Mr Lahart urged the government to act, highlighting how the Labour Courts decision to intervene in the nurses' strike showed that the Government was prepared to act when there is a crisis.

Stating that the TUI had "toned down" its pay disparity campaign amid the current nurses' dispute, Mr Lahart said the union would now be "resuming their campaign in earnest".

Mr Lahart said: "Something needs to be done ... There is a crisis in teaching."
