Govt Pledge €450k For Aran Island Post-Primary Schools
The government has pledged an allowance of €450,000 for the benefit of post-primary schools on the Aran Islands.
Seán Kyne T.D., the Government Chief Whip and the Minister of State for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands announced the news yesterday, Wednesday 20 March.
Under the terms of the allowance, a grant will be paid under the Government's Irish Language Learners Scheme to qualifying families on the Aran Islands that provide accommodation for students from the mainland who spend a school year on one of the islands.
Under this measure- which is in place since 2007, up to 30 post-primary students benefit from spending an entire school year in one of the post-primary schools on the Aran Islands: Coláiste Naomh Éinne, Inishmore, Coláiste Ghobnait, Inisheer, or Coláiste Naomh Eoin, Inishmaan. A daily grant of €27 is paid to each student for the nights they spend on the islands.
The Minister of State said: "This measure is of particular importance and value in terms of the viability of the schools and accordingly, the viability of the islands. Furthermore, as a result of this measure, students are given an opportunity which they wouldn't otherwise receive to spend an entire year being educated through Irish on the Aran Islands. This measure is thus beneficial both to the Irish Language and to the islands."
The measure was introduced in June 2018 in accordance with the assurance given by act 2.15 of the Government's Action Plan for the Irish Language 2018-2022.
