Ireland Men's Qualify For 2020 World Rugby Sevens
The Ireland Men's 7's are set to be one of the 15 core teams competing in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
It comes after they defeated Hong Kong 28-7 on Sunday, following a 19-10 win over Germany earlier in the qualifiers.
The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross, T.D. and the Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin, T.D. have congratulated the Irish Men's Rugby Sevens on their victory. Minister Ross said: "I would like to congratulate the team for their excellent performance in winning the World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifier Tournament and their victory over Hong Kong in the final. This team has come agonisingly close to achieving qualification over recent years, so it is fantastic to see them take their place at the highest level of international Sevens Rugby. I would like to commend the players and their coaching team led by Anthony Eddy and Stanley McDowell for their hard work and dedication to achieve this outstanding result."
Minister Griffin added: "I am absolutely thrilled for the Irish Men's Rugby Sevens team to have qualified for next year's World Rugby Sevens Series. We have seen a stratospheric rise for Sevens Rugby in Ireland over recent years, which is now an Olympic sport, and today's result is a credit to the commitment of the IRFU, supported by Sport Ireland. I am confident that today's result will have a very positive impact for the continued development of our elite teams and in growing participation in Sevens Rugby in Ireland."
