Govt Criticised Over Lack of Investment In E-Vehicle Charging Points
The government must "seriously step up plans" for installing charging points for electric cars in Dublin, Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Dublin John Lahart has said.
Deputy Lahart made the call following worrying new information, which reveals that no new charging points have been installed in Dublin since 2016.
"The information contained in the reply I received from the Minister is only further evidence of Fine Gael's all talk, no action approach to government. Despite the rhetoric, the fact that no new charge points have been installed in Dublin since 2016 is a clear indication of the priority this government places on reducing emission and going green," said Deputy Lahart.
"Sales of e-vehicles are rising, however people are still concerned about range and charging facilities. The fact of the matter is while there is a concerted drive to get motorists to switch to more environmentally friendly cars, there is simply not the infrastructure in place to make it happen.
"While Minister Bruton claims that a state-of-the-art electric vehicle fast charging network is in development, the locations of the chargers have not been finalised, and in fact, when you drill down into the information, 250 of the "new" chargers are actually simply replacing standard chargers. We still don't know if there will be any additional chargers in Dublin.
"Given the recent Environmental Protection Agency report, which found that Dublin's air pollution is breaching EU limits, with increased levels of nitrogen dioxide caused by traffic impacting people's health, I believe the government needs to act faster in making the move to e-driving more accessible," concluded Deputy Lahart.

Ireland is to be awarded an EU grant of €1.5m to introduce electro-mobility. The funding will be mainly used to install 3,500 charging posts around the country. Dublin To Follow London On Road Charges?
Dublin City Council is eyeing up the UK capital's controversial congestion charges, and is said to be ready to consider the introduction of a similar London-style 'tax'. However, they may not be alone, as worldwide - and closer to home as well - other urban conurbations are seeking a similar 'solution' to traffic standstills.

AIB Mortgages To Rise
Troubled Irish bank AIB is to increase its mortgage interest rates in response to its first-ever full-year loss, it has emerged today. In its preliminary results for 2009, the bank has reported pre-tax losses of €2.656bn for last year. Describing the period as a "very challenging year", AIB said it was putting aside €5.35bn provision for bad loans.

Galway Firm To Create 100 New Jobs
A shed manufacturing company is to create 100 new jobs in Tuam, Co Galway. Steeltech Sheds is to relocate its business from Headford Road in Galway to the former Coca-Cola factory in Tuam and will recruit new staff between now and 2017. The company currently employs 100 staff at bases in Cork, Dublin, Carlow and Athlone.
