Cash & 65,000 Cigarettes Seized In Cork

A revenue operation in Cork has resulted in over 65,000 unstamped cigarettes being taken out of circulation and €1,350 cash seized.

The intelligence led operation was carried out in a residential part of the city on Thursday 15 August. A man was later questioned as a result.

Branded 'Minsk', 'Marlboro' and 'NZ', the cigarettes had a combined retail value of over €39,000, representing a loss to the Exchequer of around €31,000.

The illegal cigarettes were discovered with the assistance of detector dog Eva.

A Lithuanian man in his 30's was questioned following the find and a judge at Cork District Court has granted a three month cash detention order to facilitate further investigations, which are ongoing with a view to further prosecution.

This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products in the shadow economy.
