SF: Amazon Destruction Displays Failures Of EU Trade Deal
A Sinn Fein MEP has branded the ongoing destruction and deforestation of the Amazon rainforest as proof of the serious pitfalls at the heart of the EU-Merosur trade deal.
Matt Carthy's comments come as as the Brazilian terrain experiences a record number of fires this year, with the National Institute for Space Research reporting a 83% increase on the same period in 2018.
The Sinn Fein MEP said the Mercosur deal represents a sell-out of Irish farmers and their families and is devastating news for the rural economy.
"The Mercosur deal also flies in the face of EU commitments to tackle Climate Change and that is no more obvious than when we see the ongoing practice of deliberately destroying the Amazon for cattle ranching; a policy supported by the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro," the representative for the Midlands and north West commented.
"This is a policy that will continue - and worsen - if the Mercosur deal is approved.
"The Dáil recently declared a climate emergency, and yet we are now facing the prospect of a trade deal that will significantly damage Irish agriculture and the environment.
"The government needs to state categorically that it opposes the Mercosur deal, work towards its rejection, and in respect of the ongoing destruction of the Amazon it should call in the Brazilian Ambassador to Ireland and put on record our utter disgust at the practice of burning and illegal logging supported by the Brazilian President."
