Pressure On Garda To Step Up Operations Following Drogheda Feud Murder
The shooting dead of a man in a caravan park in County Louth on Tuesday has sparked calls for Garda to step up operations aimed at tackling an ongoing feud in Drogheda.
Gardaí are appealing for information in relation the murder which saw a number of shots fired in a caravan park on the Clogherhead to Termonfeckin Road.
Sinn Fein TD for the area, Imedla Munster has urged Garda to place the main suspects of the feud, which the murder is understood to be connected to, under 24 hour surveillance.
The victim, a man in his 30's, is reportedly a close associate of a gang leader involved in the feud.
Deputy Munster said: "The people of the seaside village were 'deeply shocked' by yesterday's events.
"This latest reckless attack could have caused multiple casualties, such was the brazen nature of this. The caravan park is a popular place for families who, for decades, have spent their entire summers there.
"This shooting took place in a peaceful seaside village setting and it is clear these thugs don't care who they put at risk. What has happened has sent shockwaves through the close-knit community in the village. It is natural that people are anxious that those responsible are arrested and brought before the courts.
"People in Drogheda are of the belief this feud is nowhere near over and won't be until the instigators are arrested and charged. Frustration has set in with the local community and feel these culprits appear to act without fear of being caught.
"I have repeatedly called for round the clock surveillance and I reiterate this call again. It appears that is the only way to monitor their every move, curtail their drug dealing and to prevent further attacks and shootings."
