Irish Playwright Tom MacIntyre Dies
Irish playwright Tom MacIntyre has died aged 87.
Born in Cavan, he was best known for his theatre work and in particular "The Great Hunger".
The award-winning playwright was recognised for his play The Gallant John Joe with the Irish Times/ ESB Irish Theatre Best New Play Award in 2002.
MacIntyre also wrote two novels and six collections of poetry and played football for his county.

Irish Playwright Brian Friel Dies Aged 86
Irish playwright Brian Friel has died aged 86. Friel is best known for plays such as Dancing at Lughnasa, Philadelphia, Here I Come and Translations. He was born in County Tyrone in 1929 and moved to County Donegal in the 1960s. He died peacefully at his home after battling a long illness.

Play And Recreation Facilities Funding Increased
Funding for children's play and recreation facilities across Ireland is to be increased, the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Dr Katherine Zappone TD, has announced. Every year funding is provided to Local Authorities to fund the development of playgrounds across the country.

The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, is to attend the Edinburgh International Culture Summit. Minister Humphreys will attend a number of meetings during her visit, including Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs.

Irish Guardsman Dies In Afghan Firefight
The Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson has this morning expressed his sympathy to the family of a soldier from the 1st Battalion Irish Guards who has been killed in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that he was shot in an ambush while patrolling in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province yesterday afternoon.
