Communities Have Vital Role To Play In Climate Action - Labour
Communities across Ireland have a vital role to play in addressing climate change and should be active participants in our bid to create a more energy efficient and sustainable future.
Labour TD Seán Sherlock made the call in response to the publication of the Terms and Conditions for the first Renewable Electricity Support Scheme auction.
Deputy Sherlock said: "It's welcome that this community element has been recognised in the terms and conditions for the first Renewable Electricity Support Scheme auction.
"There are several ways in which communities can play their part to meet local electricity needs and reduce our carbon emissions nationally.
"Labour has called for communities to be given access to the national electricity grid to enable them to generate renewable energy such as wind and solar power through community owned generation schemes.
"Local councils too should be ambitious when it comes to their role in renewable energy uses, with council properties and land a potential source of the generation of wind and solar power, while schools and colleges around the country should be fitted with solar panels.
"Community based energy projects have the potential to transform our energy system and must be at the centre of our national efforts to combat climate change."

Investigation Launched Into Workplace Accident Death
Gardaí in Co Tipperary have launched an investigation in to the death of a man at about 14:00 on Thursday. The man, aged in his 30s and a mechanic, died in what has been described as a workplace accident. It is understood that he was working on a broken down truck when the vehicles axle fell on him.

Investment In Wind Energy Drops
According to the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA), investment in the wind energy sector has dropped 58%, or €265m, due to instability of the renewable energy sector. The IWEA highlighted that red tape and uncertainty is contributing to job creation and investment in the renewable energy sector.

Wind Farm Academy To Boost Donegal
A National Wind Energy Academy is being established at Letterkenny Institute of Technology as part of a €500,000 initiative being backed by the Donegal County Development Board. The first phase will see the development of a wind turbine maintenance programme which will be delivered in conjunction with BZEE, a German centre for renewable energy.

Grid Link Project Consultation Launched In Cork
Public consultation starts today on the Grid Link Project, an estimated €500 million project planned by EirGrid to upgrade the electricity grid that will deliver a wide range of benefits to the national and regional economies. The development will involve the construction of a new power line linking Leinster and Munster.
