New NI Debt Respite Scheme Under Consideration
The Department for Communities has issued a call for evidence to explore the establishment of a debt respite scheme in Northern Ireland.
The primary aim of the pre-consultation is to build on evidence already gathered and source further insight from the debt advice sector, creditors and individuals on the scale of problem debt locally.
Problem debt and the inability to keep up with regular bills and credit commitments is associated with a range of negative impacts on wider society, most notably poor mental health.
An estimated 175,679 adults in Northern Ireland are likely to need debt advice in 2022.
It is envisaged that any new scheme would incorporate provision for both a 'Breathing Space' and 'Statutory Debt Repayment Plan'.
The Breathing Space initiative hopes to provide headspace for debtors by temporarily pausing creditor enforcement action, interest and charges. The scheme also aims to help debtors access professional debt advice - and access it sooner - helping them reach sustainable debt solutions.
The pre-consultation will run for six weeks from December 14 to January 25 2023 with input sought from the debt advice sector, private and public sector creditors, voluntary sector and members of the public who wish to contribute.

FF Publishes Bill To Regulate Debt Collectors
Fianna Fáil has published a Bill to regulate debt collectors and stamp out criminal practices in the sector. The proposals, introduced by the party's Justice Spokesperson Niall Collins, include the establishment of an open register of debt collectors, a code of conduct for all operators and a ban on people with violent criminal convictions.

FF To Tackle Household Debt
The two-day Fianna Fail (FF) strategy meeting continues today with the party leader promising to address household debt. In the new Dail term the party has said they will make a move on creating legislation and a statutory body that will renegotiate household debt for families who are overwhelmed by repayments.

Man Arrested In Connection With Bodies Found On Island
Detectives investigating the discovery of two bodies on an island in Co Meath last month have arrested two men on suspicion of murder. The bodies of Eoin O'Connor and Anthony Keegan were found covered with plastic sheeting on Inchicup Island on Lough Sheelin on 26 May. They had been reported missing on 22 April.

Three Irish Universities Using Debt Collection Agencies
Three Irish universities are using debt collection agencies to try and recover outstanding student fees, the Irish Independent has revealed. Dublin City University (DCU), UCD and University of Limerick are all using the agencies, according to the newspaper.

McCarthy Report To Outline Gas And Electricity Merger
As part of the McCarthy report on State companies, the Government is expected to recommend a merger of the country's gas and electricity networks later today. The outlined move is among 50 other recommendations. The report will review how State companies are run and as to what can be sold, however it will advise against a fire sale of assets.
