Disqualified NI drivers to be banned in Republic
A new initiative agreed at last week’s British-Irish Council meeting will ensure that drivers who are disqualified in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK will automatically be banned in the Republic.
The initiative which will take effect from next April was agreed following figures released that have shown that one in six of the drivers caught speeding in the Republic last year avoided penalty points because they were registered in Northern Ireland.
A new penalty point’s scheme, similar to the current UK and Northern Ireland scheme, is also in the pipeline but will not be introduced until later in 2008.
Although points will be awarded for offences from speeding to using a mobile phone whilst driving, as in Northern Ireland, different points will be allocated for these offences.

'N' Plate For New Drivers Comes Into Force Today
The new Novice plate for new drivers is to come into force today. New drivers will replace their 'L' plates with the new 'N' plates, which they will have to display for two years. Under the new law that brings in the 'N' plate, the number of penalty points before disqualification has been reduced to seven.

Banned Drivers Cross-Border Escape Blocked
A new law to keep disqualified drivers off both UK and Republic of Ireland roads has come into force. As a result of a ground breaking agreement between the British, Irish and Northern Ireland Ministers, UK drivers disqualified for serious motoring offences in the Republic of Ireland will no longer escape punishment when they return home.

Learner Drivers Could Face Penalty Points
New penalty point offences are to take effect from today (8 December), the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD, has confirmed. Under the new legislation, penalty points will include for a number of road offenses, while a further 14 offences will bring penalty points for the first time.

New Rules From Next Summer For New Drivers
From next summer learners and newly qualified drivers will be put off the road if they clock up just six penalty points. One of a number of new rules regarding new drivers the government has decided to halve the number of points a learner driver can rack up before they are banned for six months.
