Independent Assessor Appointed In Reilly Bookbinders Dispute
An independent assessor has been appointed to carry out an assessment at Reilly Bookbinders in Wicklow, it has been revealed.
Staff involved in a dispute with Reilly Bookbinders had been having talks with the company at the Labour Relations Commission on Monday.
Fourteen workers at the firm have been staging a sit-in at the company's premises in Wicklow town since July 18 since learning that they were not going to be paid even statutory redundancy.
The company had planned to establish a European centre of excellence in an eastern European country, rumoured to be the Czech Republic, according to the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU).
However, at Monday's meeting, the company reportedly said that it intends to keep operating from its plant in Wicklow and not outsource its operations to eastern Europe.
Plans to appoint an independent assessor to determine whether or not the company is insolvent were also agreed by Reilly Bookbinders, IBEC and SIPTU.
On Friday afternoon, SIPTU said that the bookbinders staff had rejected an offer from the company to split 15,000 euros, the sale of two guillotine machines and a share in any future profits.
The workers had said that they would continue their protest until a liquidator was appointed to the company in a bid to obtain redundancy payments more quickly.
SIPTU said that the company has referred the workers to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, but the union said that it could take months to process the claim.
Reilly Bookbinders, which has been in Wicklow for 30 years, has customers, which include the Department of the Taoiseach; the Courts Service and Queen's University.
