Local Councils To Protect Shellfish Waters
Local councils in the Irish Republic are being forced by the Government to protect water quality in areas where shellfish are farmed or they could face heavy penalties.
The Government were found by the European Court to have failed to protect existing farming areas and the EU have threatened the Government with penalties if they did not take action.
Shellfish producers made the complaint to the European Court in June that the Government had failed to protect the 14 designated shellfish areas.
The European Court held that Ireland had failed to protect these areas and as a result the Government have designated an extra 40 areas.
Eamon Ryan, the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources has now announced that the number of designated shellfish farming areas across the country will be increased from 14 to 54.
The areas are in counties Clare, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Sligo and Waterford.
