95% Of Rape Claims Never Reach Court

A new study by the Rape Crisis Network has found that Ireland has the worst record in Europe when it comes to successfully prosecuting sex crimes.

The report also confirmed that 95% of rape claims never make it to court.

It also revealed that 39 women attended the sexual assault and treatment unity at Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital last month, which is more than one woman per day.

In Dublin alone at least one person is raped every day on the streets or in their home, it claimed.

The “attrition rate” – cases that drop out of the system after being reported to Gardaí – showed that less than 10% of rape and sexual assault cases are reported. Of those that are, only 95% never go to court.

The major study is due to be released in full next year.
