Half Of Drownings Last Year Were Suicides

The Irish Water Safety Association’s annual report has shown that more than half the numbers of drownings last year were suicides.

A total of 131 people drowned last year and 63 of those people drowned themselves.

The number of people that drowned in 2006 was the same as the number of drowning victims in 2005, but is still an unacceptably high figure according to Irish Water Safety.

Irish Water and Safety have said that many died because of complacency and ignorance of the dangers and the reason for 15 of the deaths could not be determined.

Of the 131 deaths in the water, 53 were accidents and the Irish Water and Safety organisation trained over 1,000 people in swimming, lifesaving and rescue last year.

Today, Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Tony Killeen, launched a programme of 14 steps to safe swimming.
