Health Minister Apologises For Cancer Error

Minister for Health Mary Harney has made an apology to a woman and her family from the Mid-West region following a misdiagnosis of breast cancer.

Initially, two incorrect test results were given to the woman by the University College Hospital Galway laboratory.

They suggested that the woman did not have the disease, which led to her treatment being delayed by 18 months.

An independent review has been commissioned into pathology services at the hospital and is being conducted by the Health Information and Quality Authority.

The Minister last night apologised for the stress and trauma caused to those involved.
