Customs Uncover 13m Euro Cannabis Haul

Customs Enforcement Officers have seized herbal cannabis worth 13million euro in Dublin yesterday.

Over one tonne of the drug was discovered in a freight consignment, which arrived in Dublin Port from South Africa.

The seizure was made as a result of the ongoing monitoring and profiling of goods imported from a number of high-risk areas by the National Freight Intelligence Unit.

Customs have said that the traffickers went to considerable lengths to conceal the haul as the drugs were broken down into single 1kg packages.

The packages were smeared in Swarfega, a chemical hand cleaner used by mechanics aimed at throwing dogs off the scent and they were also covered in multiple layers of sawdust and encased in granite lecture stands.

Customs were only able to detect the cannabis through their hi-tech X-ray scanner, which was able to penetrate the granite.

The haul was the largest single seizure of herbal cannabis found by customs officials in the country in recent years.
