Prison Officers 'Do Not Feel Safe' In Work

Around two-thirds of prison officers do not feel safe at work, a survey commissioned by the Prison Officers Association has revealed.

The survey, conducted by researchers from the University of Limerick, questioned 330 prison officers.

It found that 43% of officers had been physically attacked or threatened on a daily or weekly basis during the last year, while 12% said that they had been seriously or very seriously injured at work during that time.

The survey also found that 86% of respondents felt that not enough was being done to ensure their safety.

Over half of those questioned said that they felt anxious in work and 87% said that they felt that there had been a decrease in workplace morale.

Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed also said that they would quit the service if they found a better-paid job, while only just over half said that they were happy with the pay they currently received.

The survey is the first of its kind to be commissioned by the Prison Officers' Association.
