Stones Fans Urged To Be Careful Near Boyne

John Leech, CEO of Irish Water Safety (IWS) has urged thousands of fans attending Slane Castle for a Rolling Stones concert, to exercise caution around the Boyne River.

Around 70,000 people are set to attend the event, which takes place on Saturday.

Mr Leech said: "The Boyne River claims up to seven lives per year due to its fast flowing nature and undulating bottom that causes eddies and strong currents. Average swimmers will not be able to contend with these conditions. This year has witnessed the largest rainfall in the area since 1837 and with the river level abnormally high, coupled with an unfavourable weather forecast, I am concerned that exuberant rock revellers may lose their lives to this unforgiving river."
