Gilmore To Run For Labour Leadership
Eamon Gilmore has announced his intention to run for leadership of the Labour Party.
The Dun Laoghaire TD, who is the party's environment spokesperson, had previously run for the party's leadership in 2002.
He is the first candidate to formally declare his intention to run for the leadership since former leader Pat Rabbitte's resignation last week.
Other possible candidates whose names have been mentioned in connection with the leadership race include Dublin North East TD Tommy Broughan, the party's communications, marine and natural resources spokesperson and the party's finance spokesperson Joan Burton.
The party's deputy leader and new Leas-Cheann Comhairle Brendan Howlin declared that he would not be running for the leadership on Monday.
Mr Rabbitte had been leader of the Labour Party for five years. He said that his reason for resigning last week was due to the party's results in the recent general election and their failure to win any new seats, as well as a need for the party to modernise.
The process to elect a new leader is expected to last until mid-October, when party members will elect a new leader via postal ballot.
The party's deputy leader Liz McManus took over from Mr Rabbitte following the announcement of his resignation. She has also been named as a possible contender for the party leadership.
