Gilmore Is Frontrunner To Be Labour Leader

Eamon Gilmore looks set to become the new leader of the Irish Labour Party as he remains the only declared candidate for the leadership ahead of Thursday's deadline for nominations.

On Monday night, Dublin North East TD Tommy Broughan ruled himself out of the contest.

His decision follows that of acting party leader Liz McManus, new Leas-Cheann Comhairle Brendan Howlin and Dublin West TD Joan Burton not to run for the leadership.

It now looks likely that there will only be a contest for the deputy leadership of the party. Ms Burton and Limerick East TD Jan O'Sullivan are both in the running for the deputy leadership. Cork South-Central Ciaran Lynch had also been considering running for the deputy leadership, but has now declared that he will not be putting himself forward for the role.

Former party leader Pat Rabbitte announced his resignation last month after five years as party leader. He said that his reason for resigning was due to the party's results in the recent general election and their failure to win any new seats, as well as a need for the party to modernise.
