Eircom Warns Of Modem Security Flaw
Eircom is contacting customers over a security concerns regarding the default setup of wireless modems supplied to broadband customers.
Eircom said that it was recently made aware of a potential wireless access security issue with 3300 and 2247 series Netopia routers.
A possible vulnerability with the standard configuration or default setting used in the standard wireless security protocol had been identified.
Eircom stressed that the vulnerability only makes it possible for a person with an "advanced working knowledge of encryption and coding techniques to illegally access a customer’s Internet connection."
However, if a customer generated their own unique WEP key or password and does not use the default setting, this security risk is removed.
A spokesperson for Eircom said: "Eircom takes all issues relating to security of its products and services very seriously and it is our absolute priority to help our customers optimise wireless security on their broadband connections."
