British Midlands Rules Out Shannon Service
British Midlands has ruled out taking over the Aer Lingus service between Shannon and Heathrow, it has been confirmed.
The Shannon Airport Authority (SAA) said that the decision was due to the airline's recent announcement that it was planning to operate 18 new services from Heathrow.
Aer Lingus' decision to end its Shannon to Heathrow route in order to concentrate on its new Belfast operation has caused considerable controversy.
SAA has been attempting to find an airline to take over the Shannon-Heathrow service when Aer Lingus stops their service at the end of the year.
Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, said that the decision was disappointing.
Campaigners from the Atlantic Connectivity Alliance are now calling on the government to put further pressure on Aer Lingus to continue the service.
On Friday, Fine Gael's transport spokesperson Fergus O'Dowd called on the government to exert its influence to get Aer Lingus to reverse the decision to close the Shannon-Heathrow route at the airline's forthcoming EGM.
