Debt Linked To Ill-Health In Women

Being in debt is a major cause of ill health among women in Ireland, a new study has revealed.

The study, conducted by the Women's Health Council and the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS), found that almost 70% of respondents surveyed identified a link between their debt and health problems.

Eighty-one per cent of women had also mentioned their mental or emotional health during consultation with MABS advisors, while 68% said that their debt problems were affecting their health.

The study also found that living on a low income was the most commonly identified contributory factor to debt.

The study's authors said that they had focused on women because they were at a higher risk of suffering from debt problems and made up 65% of clients using MABS services.

The authors have called for the introduction of policies to tackle the implications of debt.
