Swiss Students 'Returning Early' Following Murder

The Swiss students who travelled to Galway with Manuela Riedo are to return home early, following her murder, it has been reported.

The 42 students, who had come to Galway at the weekend to take part in a two-week English language course, are reported to have travelled to Dublin to return to Switzerland.

The body of the 17-year-old, from Berne, was found on waste ground between Lakeshore Drive and Ceannt Railway Station on Tuesday morning.

A post-mortem revealed that the teenager had been strangled, but gardaí have not revealed details of any other injuries she may have suffered.

Miss Riedo had been staying with a host family in the city's Renmore Park area for the duration of the course and was last seen leaving the house around 7.30pm on Monday night.

Gardaí have appealed for information. Miss Riedo is described as 5ft 4ins tall, with brown shoulder length hair. When last seen, she was wearing a red and black cardigan, a grey and black herringbone waist length wool coat, grey jeans and calf length black suede boots. She also had a diamond stud in the left side of her nose and carried a large black handbag with a cherry pattern.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have seen Manuela on Sunday or Monday night or anyone else who saw anything suspicious on Monday or Tuesday night near Ceannt Railway or bus station.

On Thursday, it was also reported that they have not ruled out the possibility that Manuela's murder may be linked to a series of sexual assaults in the same area over the last three months.

It is understood that Miss Riedo's parents are unlikely to be travelling to Ireland over the next few days.

A private memorial has been held in Galway for Manuela and people in the city have been signing a book of condolence for her. Her fellow students signed the book when it was opened on Thursday.
