Irish 'Craic' Is World-Beating

Ireland has topped a poll of the friendliest travel destinations, compiled by the Lonely Planet travel guide.

The country's dark sense of humour, craic and welcoming nature helped to place it above the US, Malawi, Turkey and Scotland on Lonely Planet's Bluelist 2008.

Ireland also beat other welcoming nations, such as Fiji, Indonesia, Thailand, Samoa and Vietnam.

Irish people were praised for having a deliciously dark sense of humour and their welcoming attitude towards strangers.

The book's comments on Ireland say: "The famous ability of the Irish to find craic (fun times with convivial company) in boom or bust times - means you're always in for a treat.

"These days after the end of the 'Troubles', a cautious optimism reigns supreme, infecting the land once again with the feeling that anything's possible."

Guinness is also ranked as one of the top ten best brews in the world by Lonely Planet, which described the stout as syrupy, black nectar.

The guide also praises the Guinness Storehouse as Ireland's number one tourist attraction.
