Minister Not Informed Of Aer Lingus' Belfast Move
Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey is seeking a report after it emerged that he was not informed of Aer Lingus' decision to end its Shannon to Heathrow service until six weeks after his department were told of the decision.
The issue came to light following a parliamentary question from Fine Gael's Limerick East TD Kieran O'Donnell.
It is understood that Mr Dempsey's department became aware of Aer Lingus' plan to end the service in order to concentrate on a new Belfast base on June 13, the day before Mr Dempsey took over at the Department of Transport. It is understood that an official in the department was informed of the decision.
However, it has emerged that Mr Dempsey was not informed of the decision until July 27.
Speaking on RTE Radio's 'Morning Ireland' show on Wednesday, Mr Dempsey said that he was not officially informed that Shannon-Heathrow flights were being cancelled until August 3,when he met with the chief executive and chairman of Aer Lingus.
Mr Dempsey said that his department would investigate the matter. However, there have now been calls for both Mr Dempsey and his predecessor Martin Cullen to resign following the revelations.
In the Dalí on Thursday, Labour's Tommy Broughan called for their resignations, while Fine Gael transport spokesperson Fergus O'Dowd described both of them as incompetent or negligent.
