Self Preservation No Defence As Killer Sentenced

A Dublin man has been handed down a heavy term for the fatal stabbing of a friend after both had enjoyed New Year's celebrations.

Karl Breen, (27) from Clondalkin, admitted stabbing 21-year-old Martin McLoughlin, but said he did it to defend himself, describing the deceased as a "dirty fighter".

The killer told the court that Mr McLoughlin had him by the throat after a row broke out in his hotel room in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Breen said that it was sparked because of an altercation between himself and Mr McLoughlin's girlfriend earlier on in the evening when they had been out with their girlfriends and three other couples.

However, Breen’s claim that he was forced to defend himself on the fatal night didn’t impress the court and he was jailed for nine years.
