Strike Deferred In Moneypoint Row
A planned strike at the ESB Moneypoint plant in Co Clare has been deferred for 24 hours in order to allow proposals to be considered in the ongoing dispute.
Talks between ESB management, its main contractor Lentjes, sub-contractor ZRE and the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union at the Labour Relations Commission in Dublin went on until the early hours of Thursday morning.
The dispute centres on unpaid wages for 200 Polish workers at the power station. According to the TEEU, the workers - who were employed by Polish company ZRE on the construction of a new power plant - have not been paid for six weeks and have now been told that their employment has been terminated.
The proposals worked out by the LRC includes payment of eight weeks' wages for the 200 workers; continued employment with ZRE at another power plant in Poland for those workers wishing to remain with the company; and a commitment from the ESB to ensure that procedures were put in place to prevent such a situation from arising again.
The final proposals were due to be given to the TEEU on Thursday afternoon and a ballot of workers is due to take place on Friday.
Meanwhile, talks continued at the LRC on Thursday. Speaking to reporters on his way to the talks, Eamon Devoy from the TEEU said that the strike threat remained.
