Passport Details To Be Recorded Before GB Travel

The British Ambassador to the Irish Republic has moved to clarify the UK's changing policy on the Common Travel Area between the British Isles.

David Reddaway said: “There is no question of ending the Common Travel Area, and we have no immediate plans to change requirements for those travelling between the UK and Republic of Ireland.”

“However,” he said, “We are seeking to capture data on passengers travelling from the Republic of Ireland to the UK although no decision has been made on how it will be captured.”

The Irish Government is considering a similar way forward and we are in very close touch to ensure that our arrangements and systems are compatible.

“We want to be able to screen passengers in advance of travel, providing reassurance to the public and enabling us to target those who pose a threat to the UK and Ireland national interests and to respond appropriately, whilst expediting the movement of bona fide travellers.”

A number of countries have introduced or are introducing the ability to screen passengers in advance of travel.

The USA and Australia, for example, are looking at similar arrangements and the European Commission will be bringing forward legislation in this area for gathering such data.
