Tongues Wag As McAleese Lands In New Zealand

President Mary McAleese has today received a ceremonial welcome in Wellington, New Zealand as she embarked on a six-day visit to the country.

She was greeted with a full ancient Maori ritual – tongues out included - by members of the local Maori tribes.

The President also met with the Prime Minister and Governor General of New Zealand.

The President spoke about the immigrant community in Ireland and said she hopes Ireland will follow the example of New Zealand in multi-culturalism and tolerance.

'Significant Increase' In Supports For Victims Of Domestic Violence
Fianna Fáil is to bring forward new legislation aimed at significantly increasing the supports in place for victims of domestic violence. One of the key provisions of the legislation will be to ensure victims of domestic violence are given paid work leave to enable them to put in place practical measures to move on from a violent relationship.

Irishman Dies In New Zealand
An Irishman has been killed in a road accident in New Zealand. The victim, who has been named in local media as Martin Cadden died on Friday evening (2 January). It is understood Mr Cadden, 22, lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree on The Lake Road in Leeston, Canterbury. He was the only person in the vehicle at the time.

A vigil has been held in the hometown of the Irishman whose daughter's body was found yesterday morning in New Zealand. Last night, prayers were said for the family of two-year-old Aisling Symes in the Church of Ireland in Stradbally, Co Waterford.

Police in New Zealand have found a body during the hunt for missing toddler Aisling Symes. Searchers made the discovery after digging behind a property near the scene of the two year old's disappearance.

Irishman Drowns On New Zealand Holiday
A young Irishman has drowned while on holiday in New Zealand, it has been reported. It is believed that the 21-year-old was among a group of six tourists who had been swimming in the Waikato River in Taupo in the central part of the country's North Island, when the tragedy happened.
