Pere Charles Salvage Operation Underway

A salvage operation to recover the Pere Charles fishing trawler from the seabed off the Wexford Coast has been resumed after being suspended for nearly nine hours.

Divers working at the site of the wreck had to be brought ashore and the operation suspended shortly after 3am on Wednesday due to the rough sea conditions and increasingly strong winds.

According to reports, the salvage operation is proving difficult, but it is hoped to have have the boat, which was lying upside down, righted within the next few hours if the weather remains remains fine.

The trawler would then be towed towards the Waterford coast to shallower waters, where efforts would begin to raise it to the surface.

The Pere Charles sank in stormy weather off Hook Head in January this year and five fishermen were killed.

Another vessel, the Maggie B - which sunk last year with the loss of two lives - was successfully retrieved on Monday.
