Radiology Row Rumbles On

TDs and Senators will today question the Health Service Executive chief executive, Professor Brendan Drumm.

The meeting is taking place as the controversy over the misdiagnosis of breast cancer at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise continues.

The annual briefing session is being chaired by the Ceann Comhairle and is being held in private.

It follows last night’s confirmation from Minister for Health Mary Harney that the work of at least four people is being investigated.

She has told the Dáil that one consultant radiologist was on administrative leave but she wanted to make clear that the review did not just concern the work of that person.

She said there were two consultant radiologists and two locums over the period.

The HSE issued a statement saying the review of radiology breast diagnosis at the hospital involves all mammograms carried out in the period from November 2003 to August 2007 inclusive, irrespective of who carried them out.

It said no mammograms have been carried out in the hospital since the review commenced.

Consultant radiologist, Dr Ann O'Doherty, is leading the review. It is to be completed and published at the end of this month.

The HSE said it could not anticipate the findings of the review.
