Irish Budget Gets Final Touches
Cabinet ministers are meeting today to finalise plans for December's 2008 budget, against the backdrop of a slowdown in economic growth.
Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen, has already warned his colleagues that spending increases next year will have to be curtailed. This is to reflect the drop in tax revenue, mainly due to the downturn in the property market.
Arriving at Government Buildings for today's special Cabinet meeting, ministers spoke of the need to prioritise key areas while maintaining a tight grip on the public finances.

While the overall budgetary position remains relatively strong, the Exchequer faces a cash flow deficit of €1bn as a result of the fall in tax receipts.
Final details of the budget package for 2008 will be worked out over the next two weeks.

Labour has called for urgent action on outstanding tax payments of €4.3 billion owed to Revenue as of 31 January, 2019. According to Labour Finance spokesperson Joan Burton, a total of €969m is immediately available for collection and would make a significant difference to public services.

Generous tax breaks for executives of multinational companies were sought ahead of the 2013 Budget, the Irish Times have reported. Last Decembers Budget contained measures that would allow high-salaried executives to move to Ireland and benefit from a lower income tax rate alongside relief on expenses for private school fees and trips home.

The Labour Party have reiterated their support for no change in the zero rating of food supplements in the Budget 2020. Calling for food supplements to remain tax free, Labour leader Brendan Howlin said: "It has been the case for decades that the state charges the 0% rate of VAT on vitamins, minerals and other food supplements.
