Bus Travellers Face More Disruption

Bus passengers in Dublin faced more travel disruption today as the Dublin Bus dispute continued.

More than 100 drivers were involved in a picket at Harristown Bus depot in north Dublin on Monday, in a dispute over two new bus routes - the 4A from Ballymun to Stradbrook and 128 from Clongriffin to Rathmines.

The picket was put in place after a female driver was suspended for refusing to drive on one of the new routes, which were to be launched on Monday.

Drivers are also opposed to the company's new scheduling plans, which means that they have to start, take breaks and terminated in the city centre, rather than at the depot.

The picket at the Harristown depot is continued on Tuesday. There were fears that the dispute would spread to other areas and depots. Michael Faherty, General Secretary of the National Bus and Rail Workers' Union, has warned that unofficial action involving other Dublin garages could be sparked as a result of the ongoing dispute.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday it was was reported that the Union has written to Dublin Bus proposing that the company and the union make a joint referral to the Labour Court in a bid to resolve the current dispute.

The disruption today will be limited to the same routes as Monday, with the main areas affected including Finglas, Swords, Ballymun and Blanchardstown.
