Union Calls For All-Out Aer Lingus Strike

SIPTU has confirmed that it has applied to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions for an all-out strike by all unionised workers at Aer Lingus.

The moves comes after it emerged on Wednesday that the airline had written to staff warning them that they will be suspended if they do not give a written undertaking that they will not participate in planned strike action next week.

The letter was sent to SIPTU members by the airline's chief executive Dermot Mannion.

SIPTU served strike notice on Aer Lingus on Tuesday, over what it claims is the management's decision to unilaterally downgrade the working conditions of employees. The dispute focuses on new contracts and cost-cutting plans.

SIPTU national industry secretary Michael Halpenny said that the letter from Aer Lingus was an attack on workers' rights. Mr Halpenny also said that the union had been inundated with calls from union members who he said were angry about the letter.

On Thursday, it was reported that more than 100 Aer Lingus staff walked out of a meeting with management at Dublin Airport. Aer Lingus said that other meetings planned today had gone ahead and that other meetings were planned in Cork and Shannon.
