Fuel Costs Crippling Fishing Industry
The Government is being lobbied to follow the French example and move to help Irish fishermen meet escalating fuel costs.
The fishermen's federation has highlighted the serious problems members are facing, leaving many boats finding it difficult to even stay at sea.
The French government has already taken action to help its fishing industry. The Federation of Irish Fishermen says the Irish Government should do the same.
The Chairman of the federation, Sean O'Donoghue, said that the continuously rising fuel prices have serious implications for the fishing industry.
He said that unlike other industries, fishermen cannot pass on increased costs to buyers and many boat owners are, apparently, finding it difficult to keep their vessels at sea and to continue fishing.
The federation has asked the Minister for Agriculture & Fisheries to introduce a range of short and medium initiatives to avoid an economic crisis developing in the fishing sector.
Meanwhile, the French have been of help to Irish fishermen - a deal has been done on an exchange of fishing days arrangements allowing the re-opening of the crab fishery on the south and south/west coasts.
The area is important to smaller boats in particular and an major cash earner for them coming up to the Christmas period.
