Brutal Limerick Killing Under Investigation
A murder investigation looks likely to be starting later this afternoon following the discovery of man's body in a park in Limerick.
Gardai officers are investigating the violent death of the teenager whose body was discovered by a passer-by on a green area in O'Malley Park at the rear of Mountain View and Galtee Drive, near Galvone Industrial Estate, at around 10.30am.
The deceased has now been named as 19-year-old Geoffrey Hannon from Southill.
It is understood Mr Hannon was seen chatting with friends in the area last night, but his whereabouts after about 2.30am are unknown.
The scene was immediately sealed off following the discovery and a forensic tent was deployed by gardai to protect the scene. The State Pathologist has been called to the scene and black plastic sheeting used to cover the area around where the body was discovered.
Chief Supt Willie Keane and other senior garda officers visited the scene at lunchtime this Thursday as forensic experts began their painstaking examination of the area.
A special incident room was also established at Roxboro Garda station and the investigation is to be headed up by Supt Frank O'Brien.
Gardai will only confirm they are treating the death of Mr Hannon as suspicious but sources said they expected a full murder investigation would be launched following the post-mortem examination.
Initial reports suggest the teenager died a violent death but gardai refused to comment on reports he may have been attacked with a weapon, possibly a hatchet.
