Green Minister Helps Launch Climate Change Campaign
The Green Party will appropriately be helping to launch a new Government campaign today aimed at alerting the country to the dangers of climate change.
The Taoiseach and the Green Party Leader and Environment Minister, John Gormley, will provide details on the multi-million euro campaign, which will focus in part on how emissions can be reduced in such sectors as energy and transport.
The €15m, five-year strategy aims to boost public awareness and promote changes in behaviour. It will also focus on bringing about a big reduction in Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions.
The campaign is said to be a key element of Ireland's National Climate Change Strategy, which aims to bring production of greenhouse gases in line with Ireland's commitments under the Kyoto Protocol.
Ireland's emissions are supposed to be only 13% above 1990 levels, however they are currently at 25% and it is expected the next update from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will show the country going the wrong direction.
It is hoped by raising general public awareness of climate change and promoting behavioural change, in both the public and private sectors, as well as individuals, will contribute to significantly lowering emissions.
