School Bus Strike Called Off
No school bus strike today means that around 14,000 students who would have been affected by the stoppage have been able to get to school after all.
Industrial action planned by part-time school bus drivers employed by Bus Éireann has been deferred for a week.
The move is to allow for further negotiations between management and unions SIPTU and the National Bus and Railworkers Union.
The drivers are seeking a pay increase and improved terms and conditions in line with their full-time counterparts.
SIPTU served strike notice on Bus Éireann on behalf of the part-time school bus drivers earlier this week.
The dispute revolves around the fact that while 90% of the school bus service is contracted out to the independent sector, Bus Éireann also directly employs around 550 part-time drivers, with around 220 belonging to SIPTU.
SIPTU says the drivers currently earn €11.66 per hour and are guaranteed 21 hours of work per week.
However, they have no pension, sick pay or other benefits.
SIPTU says they are amongst the lowest paid workers in the public transport or education sectors - despite having responsibility for the health and safety of children.
They point out that school cleaners earn €13.99p/hr, school caretakers €14.38 and other Bus Éireann drivers.
