Galway Likely Target As Abbot Labs Prepares To Shed Jobs

One of Ireland's most significant employers is poised to announce job losses.

Abbott Laboratories, one of the largest US multinationals in Ireland, is expected to announce the job cuts in its Irish operations later today.

It is understood to be planning a meeting with staff this afternoon to outline details of the cuts.

The medical devices company employs more than 3,500 people in six plants around Ireland and is believed to be planning significant redundancies.

The Galway plant in Mervue is likely to be the focus of the lay-offs.

SIPTU Condemn Brinks Ireland Job Cuts
News that Brinks Ireland is to cease its cash in transit operations with the lose of 200 jobs has been condemned by SIPTU. Making the announcement on Monday, Brinks Ireland said it would end the operations by the end of July. Britvic Ireland Cuts 145 jobs
The job losses continue to rise as drinks group Britvic Ireland announces it is to lose 145 jobs over the next twelve months. Most of the jobs will be lost in the sales, IT, finance and logistics departments and are to go as part of a cost-cutting plan. Also included in the cuts will be the closure of depots in Cork, Ballyshannon and Waterford.
