Labour To Block 'Standards' Appointment

The Republic's Labour Party will do its best to halt plans to appoint former Defence Minister Michael Smith to the Standards in Public Office Commission - because of a lack of consultation.

The Government has already signalled its intention to replace former Labour TD Liam Kavanagh with Mr Smith the one-time Fianna Fail TD for Tipperary-North.

However, Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore said in the Dáil this week that he objected strongly to the Government's failure to consult other parties about the matter.

However, Finance Minister Brian Cowen said Mr Smith was an appropriate candidate and he was not aware of any issue about a prior consultation process.
