Derry's Cresent Link Dualling Opened

The £1.7m final phase of the Crescent Link dualling scheme has been officially opened in the border city of Londonderry.

The completed road scheme between Kilfennan Link Roundabout and Altnagelvin Roundabout marks the end of the upgrading of the Crescent Link to provide a continuous dual carriageway from Altnagelvin Roundabout, across the Foyle Bridge to the Culmore Roundabout - improving access to southern visitors from County Donegal who would be using the Foyle Bridge - particulary those travelling to the City of Derry Airport.

The Mayor of Derry City Council, Drew Thompson, officially opened the final 1.2km phase of the Crescent Link dualling, which includes revised traffic movement arrangements at Lisnagelvin Road and Knightsbridge junctions as well as alterations to the accesses at Altnagelvin Hospital and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. Improved pedestrian and cycling facilities are also included in the scheme.

Jim Beattie, Divisional Roads Manager for Roads Service, Northern Division, acknowledged the co-operation of local residents and councillors, representatives from the three main emergency services, Altnagelvin Hospital and local businesses during consultation with Roads Service throughout the design period and during the construction of the scheme.

Mr Beattie also congratulated the contractor, F P McCann Ltd from Magherafelt, for completing the scheme with the minimum of disruption to normal traffic flow and acknowledged the considerable efforts to ensure that access for the Ambulance, Fire and Rescue and PSNI emergency services was not impeded during construction.
