Union Probes Pay 'Benchmarking' Report
A leading trade union group, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, is meeting to discuss the controversial report published by the official benchmarking body, which impacts significantly on public sector pay.
Thursday's report concluded that the vast majority of public sector workers should not receive any pay rises such so as to bring their wages into line with the private sector.
The recommendation was made on the grounds that public-sector workers enjoy superior pensions compared to their private-sector counterparts.
As a result, up to 15 representatives from various public sector unions will gather in Dublin to discuss the matter, on Friday afternoon.
Many unions have already slammed the report, claiming ordinary workers are being asked to moderate their pay demands while those at the higher levels are getting massive wage rises.
Last month, after weeks of controversy, Government Ministers made the surprise move of deferring their recommended pay rises for one year.
After first robustly defending the awards against many critics, the decision to put off payment was agreed by the Cabinet.
