Kenny's Claim 'A Bare-Faced Lie', Ahern Says
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has slammed claims by Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny that he is not tax compliant as a "bare-faced lie".
Mr Ahern made the comment in South Africa on the first day of a week-long visit to highlight Irish aid projects in the region.
He said that the Fine Gael leader's claim that he had not paid his tax bill was a bare-faced lie and that Mr Kenny knew it.
His comments come after his spokesperson said last night that the Taoiseach would not be answering questions about the issue during the trip.
Both Mr Kenny and Labour leader Eamon Gilmore had called for Mr Ahern's resignation at the weekend. The Fine Gael leader said that it was not acceptable to have a Taoiseach who could not declare compliance with the tax codes.
On Monday, Mr Gilmore accused Mr Ahern of risking undermining his contribution to Irish politics by "clinging to office when his credibility was so undermined".
Last weekend, Mr Ahern had defended his handling of his tax affairs in a statement and also criticised the leak of information to the media on the subject.
At the Mahon tribunal in December, Mr Ahern had to answer questions regarding a number of payments or loans he received from friends in the early 1990s.
He had previously appeared before the tribunal in December and is expected to continue giving evidence in the next few months.
The Mahon Tribunal concerns alleged payments to politicians, including Mr Ahern.
