Record Number Of Visitors For Dublin Zoo

More than 900,000 people visited Dublin Zoo last year - the highest number in the zoo's 176-year history - the latest figures have revealed.

The increase in visitors has been attributed to a number of factors, including the birth of the first ever baby elephant in Ireland - Asha, who was born last May - and the arrival of a litter of kune kune pigs, which are rarely bred successfully in Ireland.

A baby male giraffe was also born at the zoo last year, along with three rare hoglets and it is also believed that one of the rhinos at the zoo may be pregnant.

The zoo also launched a new attraction last year - the Kaziranga Forest Trail, which was opened last June by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.

Leo Oosterweghel, Director of the zoo, the Irish Times that they were "absolutely delighted" with the figures.
