Troubled Limerick Estate For Demolition: President

The Irish President, Mary McAleese, is formally launching proposals for the demolition of every house in the troubled Limerick estate of Moyross.

The move is part of a 'vision document' put forward by the Northside Regeneration agency, and will make way for a series of plans to regenerate the area.

Among the amenities proposed are offices, shops, a business park, cinema and 10,000 capacity sports arena.

Other infrastructure proposals have also been put forward to support the influx of facilities such as a link road between Moyross and Coonagh Cross, as is the construction of a rail station to facilitate better commuting opportunities.

The vision document also stated: "A public square should be the focal point of the town, with a cafe or restaurant that draws activity and movement into the square, adding vitality to the area. The square will be used for community based activities including festivals and farmers markets."

A new Garda station has been recommended in the vision document, whose designers include representatives from the Garda, to tackle the infamous anti-social element, which has been the focus of media attention for the estate.

The rebuilding of the area came about after, in 2006, John Fitzgerald, former Dublin City Manager and Limerick native was sent by the Irish government to report back to the cabinet regarding the main issues affecting Moyross.

The plans have been based on John Fitzgerald's proposals, and it is hoped the regeneration will spell a new future for the estate.

Other public engagements for the Irish President include the official opening of Askeaton Pool and Leisure Centre and a visit to the Hunt Museum.

Finishing touches are currently being made to the vision documents, which will outline the future development of the city’s North side, and South side estates.
