Overseas Development Centre Opened By Taoiseach

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has opened a new information centre on overseas development and volunteering in Dublin.

The Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre (IAVC) on O'Connell Street will seek to promote public awareness and understanding of development issues and the role of Irish Aid. It will feature interactive displays, temporary exhibitions and a workshop area.

The centre will be open to the public from tomorrow.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Ahern said: "During my visit to Tanzania and South Africa last week, I saw for myself the positive impact that Ireland - the government and NGOs and missionaries and our volunteers - is having in crucial areas such as health care, housing, education and the fight against HIV and AIDS.

"As our aid programme grows in the coming years, the centre will engage the public in this effort and on ways in which the individual can become involved."

Ireland spent €815 million in funding to more than 90 countries and is expected to spend €914 million on aid this year.
