Water Contamination In Clare Prompts Warning

Residents in County Clare have been told to boil their water before consuming it following contamination of the water supply.

The warning affects 30,000 people in Ennis and the surrounding areas.

Clare County Council has said a low level of E.coli was detected although the problem has now been rectified and the situation is being monitored.

The council said that traces of contamination were found at the Drumcliff Water Treatment Plant following a fault in chlorination equipment.

The HSE has advised people to boil drinking water as well as water used for cleaning teeth and making ice until further notice.

The health warning applies to Ennis Town and the surrounding areas of Clarecastle, Crusheen, Barefield, Doora, Drumcliff and Spancilhill as well as all group water schemed by the Ennis town supply.

The latest warning comes just a day after the Environmental Protection Agency issued a stark warning that more than 300 public water supplies could pose a threat to public health.

A new water treatment for the town is being constructed and is expected to be in operation next January.
